EXCISE TAXES ON VAPING PRODUCTS
Effective January 1, 2025, five new provinces will join the coordinated vaping duty system, along with updates to stamping and transitional rules.
With this change, the Federal Government is introducing a new provincial excise tax on vape products containing e-liquids, along with a requirement for a provincial stamp. This means that in addition to the current federal tax, an additional provincial tax will apply to these specific products, leading to higher prices.
New Provinces Affected
- New Brunswick
- Manitoba
- Prince Edward Island
- Alberta
- Yukon
Key Dates: Transitional Period: January 1, 2025 to March 31, 2025:
During this 90-day transitional period, vaping products entering the duty-paid market in New Brunswick, Manitoba, Prince Edward Island, Alberta, and Yukon may be sold with either a Federal Excise Stamp or a Provincial Excise Stamp.
This applies to qualifying vaping products already in the market before January 2025 with Federal Excise Stamps.
Effective April 1, 2025:
IMPORTANT: All vaping products sold in the specified provinces must carry a province-specific excise stamp.
What does this mean for British Columbia and Saskatchewan?
Because British Columbia and Saskatchewan have opted out of the Provincial Excise Tax, these provinces will still be able to order all federally stamped vaping products from us even after April 1, 2025
What does this mean for Ontario and Quebec?
Ontario and Quebec were the first provinces to apply their own Provincial Excise Tax to all vaping products containing e-liquid. These provinces require a specific tax stamp for such products, meaning federally stamped products and provincial-stamped products for Alberta, Manitoba, New Brunswick, Prince Edward Island, and Yukon cannot be sold to residents of Ontario and Quebec
